A promise to myself!

Posted by Thomas in 40 Inch Quest, Vertical Jump Training | 4 comments

Greetings, I realize I’ve been living in the past. My previous efforts has gotten me to where I am today, but I’m nowhere close to where I should be athletically. Today during one of my infrequence workouts I tested my vertical. It’s 36. I’m not pleased with this at all. My squat is poor and my overall conditioning has been weather by work. I’m incredibly frustrated. I’m letting everyone know this stops today!! Nothing is more frustrated to me than not living up to one’s potential. I’m no exception to this rule. I’m holding myself accountable to you. Share in my goal to reach 40”. I will achieve this goal. I know it’s possible. I’ll promise ...

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

via www.youtube.com When speaking about functional strength and "CORE" here is a great video (something that I personally will aspire to this year) to think about. MERRY CHRISTMAS to myself – 38.2!!!!

Posted by Thomas in 40 Inch Quest, Vertical Jump Training | No comments

Greetings!!! To start the x-mas season I gave myself the best gift I could to myself - I hit a personal best after over an hour of training. What started as a frustrating morning of attempts to jump, I was reminded that strength minus speed training equals poor transfer. After training for a couple of weeks, more intensity, focussing on strength (force production) I retested my vertical. I was hovering around high 33 to low 34. I was very frustrated. I was wondering with all this new strength (squatting 455 for three reps in the squat – close to 3x body weight) I should be jumping much higher – at least 36 high. Thank-fully Luke was ...

Determinants of Vertical Jump

Posted by Thomas in Vertical Jump Research, Vertical Jump Training | No comments

Ham et. al (2007)1 has published a great article on determining factors for vertical jump. Below are the factors that they've identified that contribute to vertical jump height performance. Based on these factors they looked to address each factor in hopes to improve vertical jump performance. Without question there are many factors to consider, such as run-up velocity, reactive strength, body position, concentric power, neurological factors, etc. Interestingly the critical factor they identified effecting double leg vertical jump was concentric power of the legs. The take home point here is you need concentric power to be able to jump. Concentric squats are an excellent exercise that we use regularly at FITS. Other methods to develop ...

37.1 and rising

I have just jumped 37.1 without too much training. To be honest, I've been really busy with work (not that this is an excuse) and I haven't been able to get a string of descent workouts in. But that is all about to change. After testing today, I won't retest until closer to Christmas. I want to train hard and see if I can give myself a present – that's California's Sandwiches. I'll be sure to post my progress. Thanks for sharing in my journey. Hopefully I'll be able to achieve it by the new year. Thomas Related posts:UPDATE – retooling! UPDATE – retooling!

Posted by Thomas in 40 Inch Quest | No comments

Well my vertical is in a stands still. But I know exactly why. In the next blog I'm going to post something exciting for all wanna-be high-flyers – myself included. It's going to give you an idea of the qualities that are necessary to jump higher. After all there are many qualities that make a good leaper. This post will be quick. The next one will be extensive. I'm excited about the next blog, plus where my training is going. All the best, verts Related posts:36.9 That’s what I was able to jump. Not great, but... 36.9

That's what I was able to jump. Not great, but I'm pleased. I haven't been jumping, just training for a bit so that isn't too bad. With jump training that number could be easily 38+. So I'm not far away. I'll re-test in a three weeks to see how speed and power training can help improve my vertical. I'll keep you posted. Testing Date October 15, 2009

Greetings I haven't tested in awhile and I have been training. Not as much as I would like, but I'm working really hard at improving my squat. I haven't trained speed so I'm uncertain of how I will do. I figure I'm close to three times body weight in squat. The squat I use is slightly above parallel. If you're at FITS it's setting slightly above setting 17. If you're curious what the amount is, it's 435 for three reps. Not bad. I weight about 158lbs. I believe if I'm at 3x body weight it should be good enough to propel me to at least 38". The highest I've tested is 37.8 and I wasn't near ...

Getting Better

Posted by Thomas in 40 Inch Quest | No comments

Sorry I haven't written in here for awhile. Just busy. I'll be presenting the Annual Alpine Ontario Alpin Coaches conference on Saturday, so I've been busy preparing. But I've been training, especially after hearing two inspirational talks yesterday. The first talk was by Tara Norton (professional tri-athlete) who discussed how she recovered from two horrific bike crashes spaced years apart and her efforts to return to the sport dispute a significant hamstring tear for a personal best. The third talk was an amazing story, by Elizabeth Thompson, stroke survivor who is racing in Kona, Hawaii in just a few weeks – click here to see how she is doing and cheer an incredible individual and ...

Another workout!

Posted by Thomas in 40 Inch Quest | 1 comment

It's tough beginning again. So I can sympathize with anyone who is trying to get back to where they were and beyond. So today was a nice day that consisted of squats combine with box jumps and multiple broad jumps. It was a nice workout mixed in with some boys being boys. We performed some straight bar muscle ups because of a challenge. FUN. I'm glad I got it but it was tough. I feel things are coming back in line. Next a baseball game at 6:00. I can't wait.   Related posts:MERRY CHRISTMAS to myself – 38.2!!!! Greetings!!! To start the x-mas season I gave myself the... Getting Better Sorry I haven’t written in here for awhile. ...
