An Overlooked Aspect of Coaching in Athletic Development

In our athletic development programs we work with a lot of highly skilled athletes and just as many uncoordinated youth, hoping to one day become highly skilled athletes. No matter what level they are at, they are constantly being introduced to new movements, drills, and exercises that we feel will help them get better at their given sport. When teaching an athlete to perform a given task, there are a lot of different factors that go into the success you’ll have in getting the desired result. A Deeper Understanding of the Activity   One of the best things you can

Are you failing properly?

When is failing a good thing? Do you need to fail in order to learn? Rearch on motor skill acquisition has shown that failing is necessary but there isa sweet spot. This is a great post from the author of the Talent Code – highly recommended if you haven’t read it. It describes 3 types of failure zones and learning favours “the sweet spot” – where you’re successful 60 – 80% of the time, sometimes failing spectacularly, paying attention and learning from each screw up. http://thetalentcode.com/2011/12/14/how-to-fail-smarter-the-goldilocks-rule/

Flight School is officially over!

Flight School is no longer a standalone program. It is now fully integrated into all our programs. This change has occurred because of several very important considerations. Likewise, many parents and athletes who are eager to enroll in FLIGHT SCHOOL just aren’t ready. Developing vertical doesn’t happen over a 12 week period – it takes time. Hence to fully develop an athlete’s complete athleticism we’ve incorporated Flight School into all our programs. We’ve already seen much better results become of this transition. Important Considerations   1. Build a Foundation.   All explosive training must be built on a FOUNDATION of

TEN Important Concepts to prevent and treat Low Back Pain  Avoid full lumbar flexion when performing tasks such as lifting to minimize the risk of low back injury.   Most low back injuries occur due to a cumulative sustained load (sitting all day long) or repetitive motion (lumbar flexion). Research has shown that the mechanism for a disc herniation is repeated bending at end range of motion along with twisting.   There is no evidence that rest and inactivity helps with low back pain. Movement based approach encourages patients to resume activity gradually.   This doesn’t mean you

You’ll hear a lot about this concept. Everyone that aims to strengthen the “CORE” through planks, side-bridges, dead-bugs, etc. espouse the term “neutral spine.” But what is the neutral spine?? No one would refute the importance of the neutral spine, but when I ask health care professionals, strength and conditioning professionals, trainers who frequently use the term they provide the following typical comments: “It’s a position when the ASIS and PSIS are level” “It’s the normal or natural position of the spine” Some people describe neutral spine according to McGill’s work where the paraspinal muscles relax when returning from hip
